UC Master’s Student Heads to Cambridge

t a career crossroads working as an accountant facing three years of study to become a fully qualified chartered accountant, Amy Hill decided to change course and follow her heart. Since primary school Amy had always had a fascination with the inner workings of animals. “I remember being in science class when I lived in the States where we dissected an owl dropping,” Amy recalls. “We could see small bones from the mice the owl had eaten and I found it fascinating.” So Amy took the plunge and began a MSc studying Cellular and Molecular Biology. With a special interest in antibiotic resistance, Amy has been investigating the impacts of chemicals released in high amounts into the environment and anticipates that further research into this field will enable her to make the world a better place. “I want to improve our understanding of how antibiotic resistance develops in order to prolong the usefulness of these drugs for future generations. I also hope that eventually my research will lead to the creation of new therapies to treat people with bacterial infections.” Since 1960 the Woolf Fisher Trust, founded by Fisher and Paykel’s co-founder, Sir Woolf Fisher has funded overseas travel fellowships and scholarships in scientific and general education.

This year University of Canterbury Master’s student, Amy Hill has been chosen as one of four candidates who will use this prestigious scholarship to fund her doctorate studies at the University of Cambridge in England. Covering her study and living costs, the Woolf Fisher Scholarship is worth around $300,000, making it one of the most generous scholarships available to New Zealand students. “I’m really looking forward to meeting new people that are doing great research both inside and outside of my field, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to learn new techniques inside the lab and experience life in a new city.” As for making new discoveries, Amy is keen to unearth new findings to help others. “There is so much that we still do not understand about these subjects and I find it fascinating to be able to unravel some of these mysteries.” After completing her PhD Amy hopes to secure a Post Doctorate position in a research lab either in the UK or elsewhere in Europe where she can continue to develop her skills and techniques. Eventually Amy plans to return home to establish her own research lab at a university somewhere in New Zealand. “I don’t have a definite place where I would prefer to work; it really just depends on where the opportunities are.”

The new initiative aims to free up car parks and encourage the local community to consider their environment and increase their fitness too by opting to leave the car at home and take a bike instead. An avid user of Jellie Park since birth, Fendalton/ Waimairi Community Board member, Bridget Williams is spearheading the scheme. Working together with Jellie Park’s Operations Leader, Rob Gibbs, they are using creative ways to involve the public and collect data necessary to develop the scheme further. So far, a poll has taken the form of colourful beads in jars as a visual representation of what kind of

transport current users of the complex take; either car, bike or public transport. “It’s a great illustration of community collaboration,” says Williams. “Coming up with creative ideas and solutions we aim to encourage healthy habits, sustainability and community involvement.” Incentives will be offered to those who take to two wheels instead of four, which could come in the form of free drinks, towels and loyalty cards, depending on what suggestions are made from the public. The next step of the research gathering phase will involve creating a committee of bike enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. “We anticipate this group will be the voice for users and ultimately be a brainstorming group that considers future ideas to encourage a cycle friendly city.”

Bishopdale’s New Library Underway

huge win for the Bishopdale community and the members of the Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board who have successfully lobbied the Council for the funding and design of the new library and community centre was celebrated recently. In a sod turning ceremony and blessing held at the construction site in July, Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board members were in attendance with shovels in hand to mark the start of construction. After an an exhaustive site selection

process the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chose the former Bishopdale Crèche in the Bishopdale Mall for its accessibility, cost effectiveness and size. The 800 square metre single story building will include not only a library and large community hall, but also offers a meeting rooms and atrium, which will be available to community groups and available after hours. Bishopdale-based Stufkens + Chambers Architects designed the new centre and

construction is being carried out by Hawkins Construction South Island. “The old community centre was extremely popular and we know there are a number of community groups around Bishopdale that are excited for the new Library and Community Centre to open and will make great use of it,” says Val Cater, Fendalton–Waimairi Community Board Chair. Until the new centre is completed in mid 2017 a temporary library will continue to operate in Bishopdale Mall.

Singled out at just 13 for her stunning looks, Christchurch model Rebecca Dore may have what it takes to make it on the international modelling scene, but remains content staying close to home. How did you get your big break in the industry? At 13 I took part in a teenage modelling workshop at Portfolio Model Agency, during the school holidays, solely to boost my confidence and self esteem. I had always had an interest in fashion, however had never actually seen myself as “model material.” From there, I was scouted by Mel Radford Brown (Owner/ Director of Portfolio) and the rest is history as they say. Describe your first modelling gig. My first booking was the Merivale Mall Fashion Show alongside stylist Stephanie Rumble. I was so incredibly nervous when I stepped out onto the catwalk, but I got bitten by the “bug” and once the show had finished I couldn’t wait to get back out there again. What does your role as booking agent encompass at Portfolio and how do you juggle this role with modelling gigs? No day is ever the same. Day to day, I might be training the models we currently have on our books, meeting with potential new models or working alongside our clients to arrange bookings for upcoming shoots. Mel has always been so supportive of my own modelling career and is encourages me to make the most of opportunities, so the two roles complement each other quite nicely. What has been your most rewarding job to date? The great thing about modelling is that no job is ever the same. I have been fortunate to work with some of the best in the business and have made some very special friendships. My most rewarding job would certainly have to be walking at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Australia. Australian Fashion Week is among the top Fashion Weeks in the world, which provides an amazing platform for a model’s career to be catapulted to new heights. What are the perks of the job? Being surrounded by the latest trends and fashions means I am certainly never struggling to fill

my wardrobe. I have also picked up some amazing hair and make up tricks over the years which come in handy during the weekends. What has been your favourite location you’ve traveled to for work? Recently, I was flown down to Queenstown for a magazine editorial and stayed at the incredible Matakauri Lodge. Prince William and Kate stayed there during their trip to New Zealand and we were certainly given the Royal treatment! What are the misconceptions you’ve faced in the modelling business? When I was younger, I had always seen modelling as an extremely catty and competitive environment. In reality this couldn’t be further from the truth. The girls I work with are some of the most genuine and down to earth people I have ever met and have become some of my best friends over the years. What’s the craziest situation you’ve found yourself in on a shoot? When you see an image in a magazine, there is always an amazing back story as to how that image was shot. Whilst I was overseas shooting for a Bridal Magazine I wore an amazing and ridiculously expensive Cartier engagement ring. What you couldn’t see in the shots were the four security guards that followed me around all day to protect not me, but the ring! What’s the one thing they never told you about modelling? Modelling is certainly not as glamorous as it may seem. It takes a lot of hard work, determination and stamina. What’s your secret to maintaining your figure? I grew up playing a lot of sport, so have always been fairly active. These days you won’t see me on the sports field as much, but you’ll find me at the gym 5-6 times a week doing a mix of cardio, weights and yoga.

In order to do my job to the best of my ability, I need to be in the best shape possible. I do eat fairly healthy food most of the time, however chocolate is my greatest weakness! How many New Zealand Fashion Weeks have you modelled in? I modelled in my first New Zealand Fashion week at 15 for Christchurch brand MisteR and have walked in five other Fashion Weeks since. In the world of modelling, Fashion Week is like the Olympics, working with industry heavyweights who are at the top of their game, so it is always such a buzz and honour to be involved. Do you have a favourite New Zealand fashion designer you love to wear when you’re not on the job? It is hard to pick just one, however I love the fun and contemporary looks from COOP. The pieces are on trend and easy to dress up or down. I definitely have my eye on a few garments from the latest collection! How would you describe your personal fashion style? My own style is constantly evolving; however I do like to keep it fairly minimalist. A dress, ankle boots and great coat are always a staple outfit for me. I buy a lot of my clothes from overseas and keep a close eye on what is trending on the catwalks. I find Miranda Kerr and Alexis Chung particularly inspiring. They are so effortlessly chic with everything they wear. How do you enjoy spending your down time? I love exploring the new café’s and restaurants popping up all over the city. Little Pom’s is my favourite – they have the best muesli! I have also recently signed up for a half marathon so am busy training and preparing for that. Growing up in Burnside do you still live there or elsewhere in Christchurch? I am still a Burnside girl through and through. A lot of the friends I went through Burnside High School with have now relocated

around the country for their studies, but it is great to catch up with them when they are home on holidays. My partner is also involved in the Burnside Rugby Club Division 2 team, so you will often see me down on the side line cheering them on. How long do you envisage modelling for? The great thing about modelling here in Christchurch is that we are a very commercial and mature market. The older I get within the market here, the busier I will become. Where do you see yourself in five or ten years’ time? I am really settled and happy here in Christchurch. At present, I am enjoying modelling here in Christchurch and Auckland and I would love to see this continue. I closed the door on international modelling opportunities a few years ago in order to focus on my role as the model booker at Portfolio, but never say never!

Out of sight, out of mind?

s takeway culture becomes more entrenched in our everyday lives disposable coffee cups are on the rise,” says University of Canterbury (UC) sustainability advocate Dr Matt Morris. Until 2013 the university was able to recycle takeaway cups and their plastic lids, but now these cannot be recycle and instead end up in landfill, and according to Dr Morris, coffee cups are just the tip of the rubbish iceberg. Although there are no statistics for how many cups Kiwis throw away, a recent report suggest that across the Tasman, our Australian counterparts churn through an estimated one billion every year. Even though Britons go through around 2.5b a year, there are still only a handful of recycling plants in the UK that are equipped to adequately recycle coffee cups. Three options currently on the table are sending everything straight to landfill. Far from ideal, not only from the standpoint of upholding New Zealand’s proud clean and green image, but also from an economical perspective, being the most expensive waste disposal option available. Composting disposable packaging is obviously ticks the environmental box, ensuring that the resources used in the manufacturing of the product are returned safely back to the earth. However, this option presents a two problems. Firstly, most waste service providers will simply not accept coffee cups for composting, regardless of whether they are certified ‘compostable’ or not, as their mechanical systems are not designed to compost these materials. The second difficulty is that there are so many kinds of takeaway coffee cups

and most either have a plastic or wax lining that prevents it from being compost-friendly. Product Manager global packaging specialists, Shannon Sealey explains that with coffee cup’s polyethlene lining, in order for the cups to be recycled, the complexity of the process would require the lining to be separated from the paperboard in order for it to be reusable. The third option is to ban use of singleuse coffee cups, which many businesses are doing, as are some cafes who encourage their customers to bring their own reusable

cups. However, this option brings with it the need for both policy development and sometimes new equipment, as many cafes nowadays don’t have space for a dishwasher, so they rely on takeaway coffee cups instead of crockery. As there has been no directive coming from the waste companies themselves and at this juncture banning takeaway coffee cups altogether is not a viable option, the UC Sustainability Office has taken matters into their own hands with a two-year pilot that will test a separate collection system for

takeaway coffee cups that tests them in a mechanical composting system. The experimental trial’s focus is first on the agenda is creating an alternative collection system, and explore what sorting requirements are and whether the system is easily operated. Thus far, the operational trial has diverted a staggering 30,000 cups from landfill with the ‘blue bin’ system. Testing the compostability of the cups and confirming that the process runs smoothly the team then hopes to convince cafes on campus to stock only certified compostable cups. If all goes well they would like to expand the service to include other forms of singleuse food packaging, such as burger boxes, juice cups, and sushi containers. Contrary to popular belief, no takeaway coffee cup is in fact recyclable and only a small percentage is biodegradable or compostable. So, until a better solution is found your best bet is to bring your own reusable coffee cup with you to the cafe or take time out to drink in. That way it’s guaranteed you won’t be contributing to the problem. If you do have to take the cup, ask for no lid, otherwise remember to dispose of the lid and cup separately or they’ll both end up in landfill.
